Earthy and Urban, Owl and Lark

Today I get to introduce a new character to my java journeys: my mom. Ever since I started writing this blog, she has been sending me the websites for local coffee shops around our home just outside of Chicago.

Working virtually this summer gives me the opportunity to travel and check out as many new coffee shops as I want—which also makes me very excited to explore coffee atmospheres outside the cornfields of southwest Ohio.

Our first stop in the Chicago area is Owl and Lark, an upbeat and earthy coffee shop and juice bar in LaGrange, IL.

Atmosphere

Owl and Lark is the healthy millennial’s dream. It’s urban yet natural. Artsy but very intentional.

Intricate geometric patterned tile provides the base of the clean white and gray color scheme. Behind the counter white subway tile perfectly contrasts the chalkboard-colored menu boards framed with dark wood.

But the calming design comes completely alive with environmental vibes.

The shop is filled with an abundance of plants—small and large, in pots and hanging, vines, succulents, and even large-leafed stalks. The tree bark-wrapped counter front and wall covered with greenery add texture to the simple space.

An assortment of unique earthy-patterned lamp shades suspended by black cords cascade from the tall wood ceiling. Long Edison bulb lights hung from a white birch branch provides a creative accent above the counter.

The illuminated “stay wild” sign and nature prints done by a local high school student add a splash of color that fits with the upbeat atmosphere. Owl and Lark was busy with locals the entire time I sat and observed (mostly younger friends catching up with a few young professional filtering in later in the day). The busyness and music made it a little noisy for conversations but the happy commotion was inspiring for me.

As a final note, long and narrow spaces with tall exposed ceilings seem to be the most common layout for local coffee shops.

Drinks & Prices

Honey Lavender Latte . . . Rose Latte (complete with petals)

The two specialty lattes caught my eye because of how well they fit with the natural atmosphere. Both have a subtle sweetness carefully combined with distinct floral flavors—they were even good once they cooled down.

As for another drink option, the cappuccino was not very strong, but to me it was creamy and delicious. Plus, all the hot drinks come in fun, bright mugs—always a bonus.

Owl and Lark is known for their fresh squeezed juices and smoothies. The smoothie bowls even match the millennial feel of the shop. Their very good and extremely hearty breakfast toasts round out the healthy food selection. Everything on the menu is served with fresh ingredients, bright colors, and plenty of nutrients.

Don’t believe me? Their artsy Instagram is all the extra convincing you will need.

It might be on the expensive side (although not bad for the Chicago area), but Owl and Lark’s wide selection including vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options combined with the earthy and urban atmosphere make it the perfect coffee oasis.

Owl and Lark’s mission statement uses the words “contemporary” and “healthy” to describe their atmosphere, drinks, food, and culture. This purpose is achieved from the minute you walk through the door to your very last bit of avocado toast.
