I don’t like coffee.

Ummm what? I thought this was a blog about COFFEE shops?

Don’t worry—you’re in the right place. I don’t like coffee, but I love coffee shops. The environment. Various drinks. Spending time with friends (or by yourself when you just need to get away). I especially love local coffee shops because they each have their own character and represent so much of the town they’re in and the people that run the shop.

Right now, at the beginning of this coffee shop journey, my favorite local coffee shop is Courthouse Coffee (right on Main St. in downtown Xenia). Over the last semester, Courthouse has become the go to study spot for my boyfriend and me.

Atmosphere

I first fell in love with Courthouse Coffee because of the baristas. Everyone is unique, and each barista adds to the small-town, authentic character of the coffee shop.

Mindy is a master roaster and owns a farm in Yellow Springs.

Carson is a musician and worship leader on the side.

Jessica is crafty, creative, and has 11 years of experience as a barista.

They add to the comfortable setting by welcoming every customer and personally getting to know the people that regularly pass through the doors.

Going along with their personable environment, Courthouse loves students and can be flexible with their hours. They need customers, and we want an inviting and comfortable place to study—it’s a mutually beneficial relationship! Have a large group of friends that need a place to work on homework because you’re already tired of studying on campus or in your room? Just let them know you can bring customers, and they’ll work with you to provide the coffee you’re looking for.

Study Room

As far as a practical layout goes, Courthouse Coffee is diverse. The high-top tables, long benches, and couches provide many options, but the seating can be limited if the coffee shop is busy (example, finals week). However, there’s a small, new area in the back that is quieter and great for studying!

When thinking about a coffee shop’s atmosphere there are so many little details to contemplate. At Courthouse Coffee the music is upbeat, but not distracting, and it fits the unique coffee shop vibe. The eclectic decorations and furniture combine original architecture with a courthouse theme. And of course, there are the string lights that are essential for any coffee shop.

Drinks & Prices

So. Many. Choices. And I’m an indecisive person.

That being said, you will never get bored of trying new drinks at Courthouse Coffee. Not only are there more than 20 different specialty drinks, you can mix flavors to get exactly what you want. Courthouse cares about the quality of their drinks and want to make sure each individual is happy with their choice.

I might not like coffee, but according to an expert (aka my boyfriend who is really trying to get me to like coffee at least half as much as he does) Courthouse has solid coffee. They have two roasts of black coffee each day, and it’s not weak but never burnt.

Courthouse has average prices. Not bad, but not great. $2 for black coffee; $4 plus for a specialty drink. But, you’re also supporting a local business. They also sell baked goods from other locals. So, it really depends on your priorities when considering a new coffee shop.

Obviously, I love the people at Courthouse Coffee, the relaxing environment, and many drink options. But there are so many coffee shops out there! What are some of your favorite local coffee shops? Let me know and stay tuned to see where I go next!
